Welcome to PCN International - London Branch

A BRIEF HISTORY

Peoples Club of Nigeria was established as an organisation of friends who shared identical ideas and vision and expressed interest in forming a forum to enable them realise their dream ‘socialisation’. This idea was first echoed in 1993. At this point, these friends simply functioned as a social group with no specific name ascribed to it. As time progressed, the group increased in number and level of enjoyment improved. It was this level of enjoyment that spurred the  then President Prince Uzoma  to inform the membership that he used to be a member of peoples club back in Nigeria at Owerri branch. It was this information that catapulted members resolve to pursue the establishment of a branch of the club here in London. Members were asked to contact those in the club in Nigeria to find out how a branch can be established in London. During one of the meetings afterwards, Mrs Grace Adibua informed those present that she has information that a special member of the club from Nigeria was visiting London at the time on a brief holiday. Mrs Adibua volunteered to take members of the executive to meet the man who turned out to be the National Lord of Peoples Club of Nigeria.

Her suggestion was accepted and a delegation was sent to meet the Late Chief Dr (Sir) Joseph Nwankwu the National Lord of peoples club of Nigeria. Chief Nwankwu accepted to assist the establishing of a branch of the parent club in London provided that there is assurance that the set up will adhere with the club’s constitution. He asked them to meet him again for him to inform and discuss with other members of the club visiting London about the aspiration of the group.
During their 2nd visit, they were introduced to HRH Eze Desmond Ogugua and were assured that if they are ready, the problem of looking for a branch of peoples club to sponsor the branch will not be necessary as both of them will sponsor the branch because of their positions in the parent club, and so London branch began, with the reputable sponsors of Late Chief Dr (Sir) Joseph Nwankwu (National Lord) and HRH Eze (Sir) Des Ogugua (Trustee).

The preparation for the inauguration of the branch started with elections of officers of the branch on October 1993. The first chairman of the branch was Chief Barrister Nicholas Ezechie and Secretary Mr Okey Martin Uzodinma. The inauguration, chattering and first induction ceremony of the branch took place on Saturday 2nd July 1994. The ceremony was graced by the stalwarts of Peoples Club of Nigeria who were pleased to witness the inauguration of the club in London, United Kingdom. Those in attendance were Late Chief Dr (Sir) J.O.Nwankwu (Onwa Netili Ora Abagana) National Lord, HRH Eze (Sir) Des Ogugua (Miri Na Edoro Oha Mbaise) HRH Igwe F.F.B.C.Nwankwo (Tallest Man In Africa Nwafia) Chief J.O Nwafor, Chief John Anyaehie, Chief Oguejiofor 1st Chairman Abuja Capital Branch, President Ichie Obi Akukwe, Chief Eddie Igwah National Secretary, Patron Nnoruka and from the USA Houston Nze Dike Secretary Houston Branch and Dr & Dr Mrs Umeorah Treasurer Houston Branch.

After the inauguration ceremony, a significant thing happened at a dinner held at the residence of Chairman NDA Ezechie. It was brought to the attention of the President by the delegation from Houston that the branch has no ‘Charter’ certificate and Ichie Oguejiofor proposed that the delegation be issued with a certificate because the President and National Officers were in attendance. The proposal was accepted after deliberations and the President was authorised to issue the ‘Charter’ to Houston Branch.

The Charter certificate for Houston Branch was prepared and signed by the President and Secretary at that ceremony in London on 3rd July 1994.
London Branch has continued to grow from strength to strength since then.  In recognition of the branch as the first branch of the club in Europe, the branch was rewarded with the installation of its 1st branch chairman Chief N.D.A. Ezechie the 1st patron of the club outside Nigeria.

Peoples Club of Nigeria London Branch has established a charitable arm of the branch known and called ‘Peoples Club of Nigeria Charitable Foundation London’ registered with the Charity Commission. Since the inauguration of the branch, there has only been 3 chairmen for the branch namely; Patron Chief Nicholas Ezechie (Founding Chairman) Mr Okechukwu Martin Uzodinma (Founding Secretary, Chairman Emeritus) and the current Chairman Chief (Sir) Nwosu Chinedu Nwosu. The branch like other branches has continued to maintain a strong link with the National Headquarters in Nigeria and has continued to operate in a peaceful co-existence.
